How Clean Are You Really? A Simulation Study of Droplet Splash Using an Acrylic Box During Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Abstract: In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, protocols to reduce risk of exposure to healthcare teams have been implemented. The use of an acrylic box during intubation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation has been adopted worldwide. A study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of an acrylic box in limiting contamination. The findings indicate that healthcare workers are still vulnerable to exposure despite the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and an acrylic box. The causes of contamination were related to i… Show more

“…The study characteristics are presented in the Table 1. Most of the studies on simulation-based training were developed in response to SARS-CoV-2 (n = 117, 79.1%) 6–8,16–128 . Eighteen were motivated by Ebola outbreaks (12.2%), 129–146 7 by influenza (4.7%), 147–153 3 by MERS (2%), 154–156 and 3 by pandemics in general (2%) 157–159 …”

“…The premise of the patient barrier device was not only to contain aerosolization at the source but also to enable team-based CPR, including chest compressions and defibrillation as needed. Current acrylic boxes made for anesthesiologists and airway management are not necessarily conducive to the team dynamics of a cardiopulmonary arrest resuscitation team 7,8 . Our intervention and study idea were conceived in the US in March 2020, during which the lack of resources and supplies became apparent during the initial spread in Italy and Iran.…”

“…Current acrylic boxes made for anesthesiologists and airway management are not necessarily conducive to the team dynamics of a cardiopulmonary arrest resuscitation team. 7,8 Our intervention and study idea were conceived in the US in March 2020, during which the lack of resources and supplies became apparent during the initial spread in Italy and Iran. Therefore, we opted to develop a very low-cost, rapidly deployable device in times of severe resource constraints.…”
