The lncRNA Malat1 regulates microvascular function after myocardial infarction in mice via miR-26b-5p/Mfn1 axis-mediated mitochondrial dynamics

Abstract: Rationale Myocardial infarction (MI) is a leading cause of cardiovascular mortality globally. The improvement of microvascular function is critical for cardiac repair after MI. Evidence now points to long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) as key regulators of cardiac remodelling processes. The lncRNA Malat1 is involved in the development and progression of multiple cardiac diseases. Studies have shown that Malat1 is closely related to the regulation of endothelial cell regeneration. However, the potential… Show more

“…Thus, suppression of miR-214 expression may be a possible treatment for atherosclerotic CVDs. Other miRNAs, such as miR-26b-5p, miR-17-5p, and miR-181-5p, show inhibitory effects on TCF7L2 expression similar to those of miR-217 ( 122 , 123 ). Moreover, miR-26b-5p and miR-17-5p can promote adipogenic differentiation by downregulating TCF7L2 expression ( 124 ).…”

“…ROS are a main byproduct of the OXPHOS reaction that occurs in the mitochondria of mammalian cells. At normal cellular levels, ROS regulate a wide range of cellular responses, including growth, differentiation, ageing, transcription factor activity, and inflammatory reactions 41 - 47 . Nevertheless, abnormal generation of ROS has been discovered to be involved in various diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and skin disorders 45 , 48 - 52 .…”

“…Also, the lncRNA Malat1 regulated microvascular function after myocardial infarction in mice via miR-26b-5p/Mfn1 axis-mediated mitochondrial dynamics. Depletion of Malat1 further increased mitophagy, as evidenced by more enhanced expression of Parkin and PINK1 [ 121 ].…”
