Suicide capacity within the ideation-to-action framework: a scoping review protocol

Abstract: IntroductionA core facilitator of the transition from suicidal thoughts to suicide attempt is the individual’s capacity for suicide. Suicide capacity is a theoretically universal concept adaptable for specific groups that is hypothesised to comprise three contributing factors: acquired capability, for example, previous self-harm; dispositional, such as genetic influences and practical, knowledge of and access to lethal means. Given that suicide capacity as a concept is continuing to develop, a review and synth… Show more

“…A strength of this review was working to an a priori peer reviewed published protocol [ 24 ]. Rationale for modifications from the protocol has been provided, including the addition of a stage that was the amended and re-run search strategy to capture additional studies ( n = 33) that brought the review up to date.…”

“…A quality assessment limitation will also be implemented during the search stage. Although quality or critical assessment of studies is not a scoping review requirement [ 56 , 57 ], some published scoping review protocols [ 68 , 69 ] and reviews [ 70 73 ] include such an assessment. Further, as one of the purposes of the proposed review is to identify gaps in the literature, quality assessment has been recommended in such situations [ 74 ].…”

“…To date, a certain body of evidence has been accumulated on the characteristics of suicidal ideation and suicide attempt in different populations; however, the literature on this topic has some limitations. First, most studies have considered nonclinical samples and examined risk factors for suicidal ideation in general, without differentiating suicidal attempters from ideators [ 15 , 90 ]. Nevertheless, according to the ideation-to-action framework, it is necessary to expand the research on the specific factors associated with suicide attempt or mere suicidal ideation, as several different variables could be involved in the path from suicidal thoughts to suicidal acts [ 15 , 91 ].…”
