Early Diagnosis of Canine Hip Laxity: Correlation between Clinical Orthopedic Examinations and the FCI Scoring Method in a Closed Cohort of Rottweilers

Abstract: Canine hip dysplasia is a multifactorial disorder characterized by hip laxity and osteoarthritis. The early diagnosis of hip laxity is an important topic in small animal orthopedics. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between clinical orthopedic examinations and the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) scoring method. Thirty purebred Rottweilers were examined at approximately four (20 ± 2 weeks), eight (35 ± 2 weeks), and twelve months of age (54 ± 1 weeks), respectively. The Ortolani, Barlow,… Show more

“…As most studies indicate a similar prevalence of HD in males and females, it is also expected that its major early risk factor, the DI be similar in both sexes [2]. Clinical methodologies, such as the Ortolani maneuver, to predict FCI scores, are more effective at a slightly older age (around 9 months) [27].…”

“…The most often luxated joint in dogs is the coxofemoral joint [23][24][25]. The aim of surgical procedure is to maintain anatomical and physiological function of the hip joint at a long run [16].…”

“…In Toggle pin fixation cases, 50% of patient underwent arthritis and its severity depending on repairing degree and minimal surgical invasion trauma and the accidental trauma [15]. Cartilage injury did not occur with independent acetabulum drilling, but it occurred in 6/16 hips where the acetabulum was drilled through the femoral tunnel [24][25][26]. This explains why osteoarthritis is developed after hip joint stabilization with the toggle pin approach.…”

“…According to the rules of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), radiographic examination for CHD screening should be performed at the age of 12 months (or even 18 months for large-breed dogs). However, owing to the importance of CHD in affected dogs, both clinically and for their use in breeding or work, increasing attention is being given to early diagnosis ( 3 ). Clinical and radiological examinations of young animals, even before official radiographic FCI hip scoring, are increasingly in demand.…”

“…Clinical and radiological examinations of young animals, even before official radiographic FCI hip scoring, are increasingly in demand. Clinical evaluation methods include the Ortolani, Bardens, and Barlow tests, ( 3 ), whereas the Penn Hip method is preferred for radiographs, in which a distraction index (DI) is used to determine hip joint laxity ( 4 ). In addition, other radiological parameters, such as dorsal acetabular rim slope and center edge angle, and qualitative parameters, such as sclerosis of the cranial acetabular rim, location of the center of the femoral head, grading of the degenerative joint disease, and grading of the dorsal acetabular rim, are also used ( 5 ).…”
