Global prevalence of hepatitis C virus in women of childbearing age in 2019: a modelling study

Abstract: Background Treatment for infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) during pregnancy has not yet been approved; however, interventions specifically targeting women, especially those of childbearing age (15-49 years), could prevent vertical transmission and community spread. To assess the impact of such interventions, improved prevalence estimates in this group are needed. We aimed to estimate the global prevalence of viraemic HCV in 2019 among women of childbearing age. Methods In this modelling study, we used prev… Show more

“…After controlling period and cohort effects, we observed that the risk of HCV-associated mortality increased with age, whereas the risk of incidence was similar across different age groups, except for those patients aged ≤5 years. The high incidences of HCV in patients aged ≤5 years might be associated with mother-to-child transmission ( Dugan et al, 2021 ;Gentile et al, 2014 ).…”

“…25 It has been estimated that the global prevalence of hepatitis C viraemia in females of child-bearing age is 0.78%. 26 This suggests these guidelines could be widely applicable, though local assessment of cost-benefit would be required.…”

“…The annual updates allowed us to provide up-to-date global and regional data to national agencies to notify travelers of endemic countries [18], and national blood banks of the likelihood of HCV and HBV infection among blood collected among migrants. The analyses conducted by Polaris enabled us to estimate the global prevalence of HBV and HCV in the pediatric population and women of childbearing age to support programs targeting a reduction in mother to child transmission [19][20][21].…”
