With the advancement of civilization, water purification, as well as management and disposal of ever-increasing municipal solid waste (MSW), and e-waste, have become global concerns. To address these issues in a sustainable way, a 3D solar evaporator has been proposed in this paper by repurposing recycled paper from MSW in the form of egg trays and waste dry toner (e-waste) using a facile fabrication method. The unique 3D porous structure, fibrous surface, superior water absorbing capability as well as low thermal conductivity of wastepaperderived egg trays make them an excellent candidate for an efficient solar evaporator, while the waste toner powder coating significantly enhances the optical absorbance capacity. Under 1 sun illumination, the proposed solar evaporator demonstrates an excellent evaporation rate and efficiency of 1.3 kg/m 2 h and 78.5%, respectively. Moreover, the competitive advantage of the 3D structure in collecting solar irradiance at various light incident angles in comparison to a 2D structure, excellent cycle stability, low processing temperature, and the use of low-cost waste materials enable its use for large-scale water purification systems.

Pengelolaan sampah menjadi hal penting dalam keberlangsungan kehidupan. Sistem pengelolaan sampah yang buruk akan membawa berbagai dampak buruk bagi lingkungan maupun kesehatan manusia. Zero waste adalah salah satu upaya yang mampu mengendalikan meningkatnya pencemaran lingkungan akibat keberadaan sampah, dengan mengadopsi konsep reduce, reuse, dan recycle. Keberadaan produk-produk yang menerapkan konsep zero waste turut mendukung upaya meminimalisir sampah. Peluang ini semestinya dimanfaatkan pelaku bisnis untuk menggali lebih dalam upaya apa saja yang dapat dilakukan untuk menarik minat beli konsumen terhadap produk-produk zero waste. Hal ini menjadi dasar tujuan penelitian ini untuk menganalisis faktor apa saja yang mempengaruhi minat pembelian zero waste product. Penelitian ini merupakan jenis penelitian kuantitatif dengan teknik analisis regresi linier berganda. Pengolahan dan pengujian data menggunakan aplikasi IBM-SPSS Statistik 25. Sedangkan metode yang digunakan adalah metode observasi, kuesioner, dokumentasi dan kepustakaan. Responden dalam penelitian ini konsumen yang pernah melakukan pembelian di Toko zero waste EtniKayu.id. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa secara parsial zero waste lifestyle berpengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap minat pembelian zero waste product, demikian halnya green perceived value juga berpengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap minat pembelian zero waste product. Sedangkan secara simultan hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa zero waste lifestyle dan green perceived value berpengaruh positif dan signifikan terhadap minat pembelian zero waste product. Uji koefisien determinasi menunjukkan bahwa variabel zero waste lifestyle dan green perceived value memberi pengaruh sebesar 50,5% terhadap minat pembelian zero waste product. Hal ini menjadi peluang bagi penelitian berikutnya untuk menganalisis lebih lanjut variabel lainnya yang berpotensi mempengaruhi minat pembelian zero waste product.

Cellulose containing textiles (cotton) and cardboard/carton-based wastes represent a large pool of untapped organic carbon. These wastes have enormous potential for utilization as carbon feedstocks in industrial biotechnology processes. Essentially, cotton/cardboard (CC) waste is pure cellulose (with some additives) in the form of polymerised glucose composed of β (1→4) linked D-glucose subunits. CC waste materials can be enzymatically hydrolysed to monomers of D-glucose in aqueous solution, to form ‘glucose juice’, which can then be fermented to bio-ethanol. In principle, value added chemicals could also be produced from glucose juice. Bioconversion of CC waste to other compounds of importance to industry could form the basis of environmentally attractive production routes. Terpenes are one of the largest and most diverse classes of natural compounds, and are of value to industry as they have a wide range of applications as flavourings, fragrances, pharmaceuticals, bio-pesticides and biofuels. Here, we investigated the bioconversion of CC waste to the exemplar terpene limonene as a proof-of-concept. Six different CC waste streams were enzymatically hydrolysed to glucose juice and used to produce limonene by fermentation of an engineered E. coli microbial cell factory. D-glucose content was determined in the glucose juice, and then metabolized by E. coli using an engineered heterogenic biolipid synthesis pathway (the mevalonate pathway) to produce limonene (300–700 mg L− 1), which was then partitioned into a nonane overlay. This study establishes an important proof-of-concept for terpene production from hydrolysed CC waste streams.
