Association between exposure to ambient air pollution and hospital admission, incidence, and mortality of stroke: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis of more than 23 million participants

Abstract: Background Previous studies have suggested that exposure to air pollution may increase stroke risk, but the results remain inconsistent. Evidence of more recent studies is highly warranted, especially gas air pollutants. Methods We searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science to identify studies till February 2020 and conducted a meta-analysis on the association between air pollution (PM2.5, particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5… Show more

“…Therefore, a statistically significant overall effect might not always have the same clinical relevance. 3,74 Also, the question remains if the difference in risk increase found in low-income and middle-income countries compared with most high-income countries is solely the result of higher air pollution levels, or if this difference is modified by ethnicity or behavioural differences. Almost all low-income and middle-income countries investigated are in Asia, whereas most high-income countries are in Europe or North America.…”

“…Epidemiological studies of short-term exposure to air pollution and hospital admissions for stroke have generated inconclusive results ( 43 ). A 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis reported that 10 μg/m 3 increases in the concentrations of all five pollutants were associated with hospital admissions for stroke; odds ratios ranged from 1.002 for O 3 to 1.023 for NO 2 .…”

“…PM is of concern not only to researchers but also to the general public. Numerous toxicological and epidemiological studies have proven the adverse links between exposure to PM and health effects [19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26]. The cancer risk resulting from PM exposure has also been demonstrated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) [27].…”
