Precision Mapping of COVID-19 Vulnerable Locales by Epidemiological and Socioeconomic Risk Factors, Developed Using South Korean Data

Abstract: COVID-19 has severely impacted socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. To support pandemic control strategies, geographically weighted negative binomial regression (GWNBR) mapped COVID-19 risk related to epidemiological and socioeconomic risk factors using South Korean incidence data (20 January 2020 to 1 July 2020). We constructed COVID-19-specific socioeconomic and epidemiological themes using established social theoretical frameworks and created composite indexes through principal component analysis. “…In a study using data gathered in Korea, the risk of COVID-19 increased in line with immutable factors, such as higher area morbidity, crowding, and population mobility. Lower rates of social distancing, as well as poorer access to healthcare and education, also increased the risk of infection [ 37 ]. These variables can only be challenged using a broad, population based approach to systematic change.…”

“…For instance, in South Korea, the complete location information and demographics information is also released. Furthermore, temporal information and mask status is also published for the people's awareness [35]. Many studies reported that people with individualistic orientation are less likely to consider the control measures acceptable because they have higher privacy concerns and lower perceptions of the social benefits.…”

“…The built environment risk indicator is meant to identify areas at a higher risk of COVID-19 infection due to lack of adequate space available to adhere to shelter-in-place mandates and other precautions that aim to limit the spread of COVID-19 [ 16 , 27 , 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 ]. The indicator is composed of four variables: Population density, operationally defined as the total number of persons divided by the ZCTA’s land area in square miles.…”

“…The social vulnerability indicator is a close replica of the 2018 social vulnerability index (SVI), which was created by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to identify vulnerable areas in need of preparation and response to hazardous events or natural disasters. The SVI indicator addresses the level to which community experiences different social conditions, such as unemployment and that might affect its ability to prepare and respond to hazardous events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic [ 29 , 30 , 31 ]. The CDC’s SVI is only available at the census tract level.…”
