“…The appropriately disaggregated cells were rapidly, efficiently and quantitatively analysed by multicolour FC (Auguste et al 2020 ; Barmo et al 2013 ; Canesi et al 2008 ; Ciacci et al 2011 ; Souza et al 2023 ). This methodology that can be successfully applied to analyse hepatopancreatic cells from terrestrial isopods in order to conduct a so-called environmental diagnosis from a cytologic/histologic point of view, aimed to protect environmental welfare and human health (Abelouah et al 2023 ; da Silva Souza et al 2020 ; Plutino et al 2022 ; Vieira et al 2021 ). The current framework is partially derived from a previous work on an artificial pollution model (Manti et al 2013 ), i.e.…”

“…Finally, the inter-site variability does not question the relevance of Oscarella lobularis as valuable biomonitor: its homogeneous metal bioaccumulation profile makes it a good candidate as a bioindicator of metallic pollution in Mediterranean Sea. The choice of sentinel or bioindicator species should be guided by several criteria: i) preferring sessile species or species displaying limited dispersion (Azizi et al, 2018;Vieira et al, 2021), ii) opting for filter feeders (Batista et al, 2014;Milanese et al, 2003), iii) identifying, capturing and collecting easily a species with a sufficient population size to study spatial variations of ecosystems (Berthet, 2013). Oscarella lobularis fits all these criteria.…”

“…The use of cadmium containing fertilizer, agricultural chemicals, pesticides and sewage sludge in farm land, might also contribute to the contamination of water. As a nondegradable cumulative pollutant, Cd is considered capable of altering aquatic tropic levels for centuries [36][37][38] . Cadmium is toxic element which shows their carcinogenic effect on aquatic biota and humans.…”
