(305) SrTiO3 as substrate for coherently tilted epitaxial YBa2Cu3Ox thin films

Abstract: High T, superconductingYBazCusO, (YBCO) thin films have been prepared on (305) SrTiOs (STO) substrates. X-ray diffraction analysis and Rutherford backscattering experiments reveal that the c-axis of the layers is directed along the [OOl] ST0 axis. Bragg reflection measurements from YBCO lattice planes with high h, k, and I indices confirm that the film growth is epitaxial and almost single domain. For the critical current density j,(77 K) values of 2>( lo6 and 1 x lo3 A/cm2 have been found in the [OlO] and [S… Show more

“…The vicinal films have a step-like surface morphology due to step-flow growth as observed by atomic force microscopy. 7,8 The film terraces are smooth and inclined by an angle ϭ9.5°Ϯ1.7°with respect to the macroscopic film surface in good agreement to the nominal substrate miscut angle. Due to the bunching of small steps with unit-cell height 9 10 The films reveal a metallic conductivity behavior in the normal state (100 KрTр290 K).…”

“…A disadvantage of these structures is the weak coupling between the superconductor and the ferromagnet, due to the strongly anisotropic nature of superconductivity in YBCO. In order to achieve coupling that is ͑partly͒ in the ab plane, we will exploit coherently tilted epitaxial growth 25 of YBCO on STO ͑305͒ substrates. On these substrates, YBCO grows with the c axis making a 31°a ngle with respect to the sample surface, as indicated in Fig.…”

“…33. [9] In an analogous manner, vicinal SrTiO 3 (110) surfaces have been utilized to prepare nearly untwinned YBa2Cu307.8 films, [393] vicinal MgO (110) surfaces with CeO 2 buffer layers have been used to grow untwinned Bi2Sr2Can.lOUnO2n+4 (01n)films[ 3s5] and vicinal LaSrGaO 4 (110) surfaces have enabled the growth of untwinned Bi2Sr2CuO s (011) films. CunO2n+4 films grown on vicinal perovskite substrates is also evident from x-ray diffraction measurements.…”
