Use of a low‐cost telecytopathology method for remote assessment of thyroid FNAs

Abstract: Low-cost telecytopathology is an efficient method for the remote assessment of thyroid FNAB adequacy and diagnosis. The wide use of such technology in low-resource or remote centers may have a positive impact on the number of adequate or satisfactory samples, optimizing the management of patients who have thyroid nodules.

“…Videoconferencing software, which has become a ubiquitous feature of our professional and even social lives, can be used for telecytology applications as well. 16,17 It is uncertain what the future holds and how our interpersonal, professional, and educational interactions will be altered in the future. Although the challenges are great, the opportunities are great as well.…”

“…These include remote doctor-to-doctor consultation for thyroid nodule and cancer evaluation ( 7 ), allowing experts in one geographic region to reach another in need. Similarly, methods to conduct both remote cytopathology ( 8 ) and operative pathology ( 9 ) consults have been examined. Remote monitoring of hospitalized, isolated patients after high-dose radioiodine therapy has been tested to help reduce personnel exposure to these patients ( 10 ).…”

“…5 Digital cytopathology, however, is slightly behind in terms of wider implementation, mainly due to technical issues such as the three-dimensionality of the specimens, paucicellular samples and the wide variability of preparations. [6][7][8] It has been widely used for telecytology and rapid on-site evaluation, 9,10 but few papers have compared actual diagnoses obtained using whole slide images (WSIs) with those obtained using glass slides [11][12][13] , and even fewer have followed the CAP guidelines for the validation of WSI in a clinical setting. 14 In the current study, we aimed to validate different types of cytological preparations for routine clinical use in digital pathology, following the 2021 CAP guidelines, and also to highlight specific characteristics and difficulties involved in the use of such preparations in clinical everyday digital sign-out.…”
