A decay effect of the growth rate associated with genome reduction in Escherichia coli

Abstract: BackgroundBacterial growth is an important topic in microbiology and of crucial importance to better understand living cells. Bacterial growth dynamics are quantitatively examined using various methods to determine the physical, chemical or biological features of growing populations. Due to methodological differences, the exponential growth rate, which is a parameter that is representative of growth dynamics, should be differentiated. Ignoring such differentiation in the growth analysis might overlook somehow … Show more

“…Obtained results were averaged and used to create growth curves that enabled the identification of the logarithmic phase. After that, the µ parameter (growth rate) was calculated according to Tsuchiya et al (2018), and expressed as a parameter of the ratio of the growth rate of the tested samples to the control growth curve.…”

“…To assess changes in the growth rates of the chosen microorganisms, it was proposed to introduce a parameter characterizing the ratio of the growth rate in the tested samples to the growth rate of the control samples (µ sample /µ control ) (Fig. 5,6) (Tsuchiya et al 2018). E. coli incubated with 8 out of 18 elutes obtained the growth parameter greater than 1.1.…”

“…Both genome reduction and nutritional decline cause a significant decrease in population growth in liquid culture [22,27], and colony growth on solid medium also becomes slower. Whether the correlation between colony size and the Voronoi area changed with colony growth was analysed temporally in a 12-h interval (Fig.…”

“…Such typical growth curves are often analyzed with various sigmoidal functions, e.g., Logistic, Gompertz, etc. [7][8][9][10], and their derivatives [11][12][13]. Nevertheless, model-based theoretical fitting was only applicable for growth curves with a regular S-shape and not for those with an irregular shape.…”
