Custom‐made Prosthesis for Reconstruction after Radical Resection for Chondrosarcoma of Manubrium

Abstract: The clinical incidence of tumors in the manubrium is not high. Regardless of whether the tumor is primary or metastatic, the tumor should be completely removed as long as the patient is able to tolerate the surgery. This procedure can lead to sternal defects. Deciding on the method of defect reconstruction is a critical problem that clinicians face. In this , to reduce the limitations of the patient's upper body movement after surgery due to the inflexibility in the connections of the sternal prosthesis, we cr… Show more

“…Sternum and ribs are affected in fifty-eight percent of cases, making it to be the most frequent primary malignant chest wall tumour. Generally, this tumour is diagnosed because of its big sizes and pain and in many cases CT scan reveals metastases (5,6). In our patient first symptom of chondrosarcoma was pain but tumefaction or nodules were not reported.…”

“…Technological development and improved understanding of the mechanism of carcinoma progression, together with improved staging and classi cation of the carcinoma could make some important impacts on treatment and prognosis. Presently, radically removing the tumor [4], bone grafting [18], and prosthesis arthroplasty [3,19] coupled with preoperative and postoperative chemotherapy [7] have all established advantages, although de ciencies exist in each method. One of the merits of this newly revised pivot knee prosthesis is that it could preserve the knee joint function, which may make the patient live more conveniently and con dently.…”

“…The principles for this newly revised pivot knee prosthesis arthroplasty are patient Enneking stage classi ed as equal or below B, with good topical condition, no metastasis and no important vessels or nerves involved [1,3]. A small number of patients who have heavy bone destruction of benign tumors or who have distant metastasis but are in good and healthy condition could also choose this strategy to improve their quality of life and limb functions despite reports of rare cases.…”

“…The characteristics of chondrosarcoma include slow tumor growth, low-grade disease, extremely low rates of metastasis, and slight male predominance. Primary bone tumors located over the chest wall are rarely observed, and account for less than 1% of all primary bone neoplasms[ 3 , 4 ]. However, 15% of chondrosarcomas are located over the chest wall, with an annual incidence of 0.5 million/year[ 5 , 6 ].…”
