Alcohol Use and Multimorbidity Among Individuals Living with HIV

Abstract: Alcohol is prevalent among people living with HIV and can lead to multiple comorbid conditions (multimorbidity). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between alcohol use history and multimorbidity among people living with HIV. A retrospective cohort study design was conducted at an urban, academic infectious disease clinic in Kentucky. Individuals seeking care between 2010 and 2014 were included. Modified Poisson regression was used to examine the relationship between alcohol use history (… Show more

“…This might happen because chronic diseases are more common among older people who are less likely to use substances, and because these individuals stop using substances when they realize they are sick. People in the US living with HIV and current use of alcohol had higher risk of multimorbidity compared to non-drinkers (Crawford and Thornton, 2019). There are not enough studies about the association of substance use and MM.…”

“…The model was adjusted for age, drug use, smoking status, insurance status, HIV duration, cd4 + cell counts, and log viral load. The unadjusted model showed that drug use was also associated with multimorbidity (IRR: 1.22 [95% CI: 1.01 to 1.47], p < 0.05) (Crawford and Thornton, 2019).…”

“…Meanwhile, the rate of multimorbidity (at least two chronic conditions) is steadily increasing among PLWH (e.g. increased from 8.2% in 2000, 22.4% in 2009 to 54.1% in 2014 in the US [9,12] and will be as high as 89% in 2035 according to a projection modelling study [13]). Consequently, non-AIDS related comorbidities played an important contribution to the cause of death or mortality [14][15][16][17].…”
