Gene Expression of Endocannabinoid System Components in Skeletal Muscle and Adipose Tissue of South Asians and White Caucasians with Overweight

Abstract: South Asian men with overweight have higher plasma 2-linoleoyl glycerol and N-linoleoylethanolamine levels and lower expression of CB receptors and the endocannabinoid degradation enzyme FAAH2 in skeletal muscle compared to white Caucasians.

“…In these models, an increased endocannabinoid tone (e.g. circulating endocannabinoid levels) lies at the core of the disease progression, which is in line with observations in patients suffering from high adiposity and/or obesity [39][40][41] . Therefore, it appears that CB1 antagonists can induce distinct adaptations in the same tissue, i.e.…”

“…For instance, knockdown or inhibition of FAAH in mice led to increased NAE levels 33 , 34 . Moreover, decreased expression of FAAH1 and FAAH2 was associated with increased levels of NAEs in the skeletal muscle of south Asian as compared with Caucasians 35 . However, the comparison of lipid mediator levels revealed few differences between psoriatic and healthy skin substitutes, with only SEA levels being increased in the psoriatic substitutes.…”
