Penile Paraffinoma

Abstract: Penile paraffinoma can occur following injection of liquid paraffin or similar substances, generally used by non-healthcare personnel for the purpose of penile augmentations, and can cause significant pain, ulceration, and penile deformity. Definitive management includes surgical excision with reconstruction as required. Prevention of its use through awareness and education may be required in communities where the practice is more common.

“…Another alternative can be done, such as partial and total penectomy for cases of advanced-stage penile cancer or in cases of penile cancer that is more proximal [3] The rate of morbidity both functionally and psychologically is a determining factor in surgical management [11]. Total penectomy includes excision of the penis to the suspensory ligament, maintaining the proximal corpora cavernosa [12]. Radical penectomy is performed less frequently, including excision of the penis by removing the entire body.…”

“…For non-reconstructive surgeons, the Cecil's staged scrotal flap operation is a good choice for its relative simplicity (Figures 4,5). The bi-pedicled scrotal flap technique can still be performed even if more than half of the penile skin is involved (17,35,37,38,40).…”

“…We could find only one systematic search of the English literature through PubMed and Scopus by Downey et al that summarizes the currently available "relevant" literature on the subject, which is worth discussing in more detail due to its unique review and global nature (40). A total of 10 case series and 26 case reports were identified between 1956 and 2017, totaling 124 cases, with a mean age of geographic distribution in eastern Europe and southeast Asia, the majority originated in Korea (31.7%), Bulgaria (19.8%), and Hungary (14.3%) with a much lower incidence in southeast Asia (1.6% to 3.2%).…”
