Utility of radial reformation of three-dimensional fat-suppressed multi-echo gradient-recalled-echo images for the evaluation of acetabular labral injuries and femoroacetabular impingement

Abstract: Type 1 and type 2 radial reformations of 3D FS me-GRE imaging were useful for evaluating acetabular labral injuries and determining whether patients with acetabular labral injuries have FAI, respectively.

“…However, they included both tears status and degeneration of the acetabular labrum in their labrum assessment. 18,39 Despite ongoing advancements, the radiographic classification system for labrum assessment is still evolving, and a standardized radiographic classification system for reporting results has yet to be established. It is anticipated that the future radial plane studies, boasting high sensitivity, and accuracy, will fill this gap.…”

“…3D GRE‐based techniques for radial reconstruction of non‐enhanced hip MRI, including 3D DESS and 3D multiple‐echo sequences, use small excitation pulses and short repetition time. This allows for high‐quality multi‐planar reconstruction after a single acquisition in reasonable scan durations 18,35,39 . The DESS sequence, exclusive to Siemens Healthcare, is a combination of a fast imaging with steady precession (FISP) and a reversed FISP (PSIF, PSIF is just a reversal of the letters in FISP) sequence, obtained during the same acquisition 40 .…”

“…Fitting all these considerations together, we have determined to use 3D DESS sequence with radial imaging at 3.0 Tesla to evaluate the labrum, the validity of which has been testified 34 . The visualization of the labrum and the cartilage is further improved due to the radial imaging approach 35,36 . Based on the previous studies supporting the possibility of fibrocartilage repair and the high accuracy of DESS technique for detecting labral lesion, we believe that the intermedia signal intensity demonstrated by 3D DESS MRI is convincingly the results of fibrocartilage-like tissue through marrow stimulation at the labral defect area.…”
