3-Methyl-4-amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole as corrosion inhibitor for 6061 Al alloy in 0.5 M sodium hydroxide solution

Abstract: 3-Methyl-4-amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole (MAMT) was synthesized, and its inhibition action on the corrosion of 6061 Al alloy in 0.5 M sodium hydroxide was investigated by means of potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. The effect of inhibitor concentration, temperature, and concentration of the corrosion medium on the inhibitor action was investigated. The surface morphology of the metal surface was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The inhibitio… Show more

“…Compounds containing nitrogen and/or sulphur have also been proved to be efficient corrosion inhibitors, an example of which may be studies on 3-methyl-4-amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole (MAMT). Inhibitor molecules adsorption on protected metal surface occurs through amine and thiol functional groups [24].…”

“…The measured Nyquist plot usually appears as an imperfect semicircle, which is related to the frequency dispersion caused by the roughness and inhomogeneity of the metal surface . The CPE was selected substituted for double layer capacitance ( C dl ) because it is a frequency dependent component and has relations with surface inhomogeneity . The values of the corresponding fitted data are presented in Tables .…”

“…In order to study the corrosion inhibition effect of inhibitor and to obtain the kinetic parameters during corrosion process, PP measurements were performed at 293, 298, 303, 308, and 313 K. The relationship between activation energy and corrosion rate at different temperatures can be determined by the Arrhenius equation: lnicorr=lnAEnormalaRT where A is the Arrhenius preexponential factor, T is the absolute temperature ( K ), R is the gas constant ( R = 8.314 J/mol/K), i corr is the corrosion rate ( A ), and E a is the apparent activation energy. As shown in Figure , the Arrhenius diagram appears as straight lines with slope of −E a / R and intercept of ln A .…”

“…Various corrosion inhibitors are recently tested to substitute the already banned Cr(VI) compounds. Hence, the corrosion inhibition capability of benzotriazole and tolyltriazole [67][68][69][70] was examined, evincing the possibility for the use of these compounds as corrosion inhibitors.…”
