3-D-Printed Air-Core Inductors for High-Frequency Power Converters

Abstract: This paper presents the design, modeling and characterization of 3D printed air core inductors for high frequency power electronics circuits. The use of 3D modeling techniques to make passive components extends the design flexibility and addresses some of the fabrication limitations of traditional processes. Recent work [1]-[9] has demonstrated the feasibility of incorporating air core inductors in high frequency (>10 MHz) switching power converters. These implementations have used discrete wire wound solenoid… Show more

“…With miniaturization, AM allows for the manufacturing of small parts that would otherwise be difficult to obtain. AM has found application for thin films [60], inductors [61], solar cells [62], and others. The most common 3D printing techniques for electronics are inkjet and direct writing of conductive inks.…”

“…Also, air core inductors are not limited by current saturation or by a Curie temperature limit, therefore offering much better linearity over wide operation range compared to their cored counterparts. Moreover, modern fabrication techniques [e.g., PCB [22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29], 3D printing [30], etc.] can be leveraged to reduce weight and cost without sacrificing performance.…”

“…4 An air-core configuration is an alternative solution for megahertz-class power converters. [9][10][11][12] Air-core magnetic components are free from magnetic material iron losses. However, their magnetic flux density in the high-frequency region must be considered due to the following reasons.…”
