3-D Numerical Investigation of Subsurface Flow in Anisotropic Porous Media using Multipoint Flux Approximation Method

Abstract: Anisotropy of hydraulic properties of subsurface geologic formations is an essential feature that has been established as a consequence of the different geologic processes that they undergo during the longer geologic time scale. With respect to petroleum reservoirs, in many cases, anisotropy plays significant role in dictating the direction of flow that becomes no longer dependent only on the pressure gradient direction but also on the principal directions of anisotropy. Furthermore, in complex systems involvi… Show more

“…This approach generates a set of predefined pressure fields in such a way that the undetermined coefficients are calculated from the experimenting pressure fields. The experimenting pressure field approach has been successfully implemented to solve incompressible single and two-phase flow problems Negara 2015;Negara et al 2013Negara et al , 2014Negara et al , 2015Salama et al 2013. In this paper, we extend the application of experimenting pressure field approach to solve the compressible single-phase gas flow in shale reservoirs.…”

“…We also adapt the experimenting field approach developed by Sun et al (2012) which solves a set of local problems and construct the global system automatically, Salama et al 2014. This scheme has been rigorously tested against a number of cases in both single and two-phase systems including anisotropy, e.g., Osman et al 2012, Negara et al 2013. Multipoint flux approximation has grown following two independent routes.…”
