3-D Longitudinal Imaging of Tumor Angiogenesis in Mice in Vivo Using Ultrafast Doppler Tomography

Abstract: Angiogenesis, the formation of new vessels, is one of the key mechanisms in tumor development and an appealing target for therapy. Non-invasive, high-resolution, high sensitivity, quantitative 3D imaging techniques are required to correctly depict tumor heterogeneous vasculature over time. Ultrafast Doppler was recently introduced and provides an unprecedented combination of resolution, penetration depth and sensitivity without requiring any contrast agents. The technique was further extended to 3D with Ultraf… Show more

“…When comparing the three scans, anatomical or pathological information outside the imaging plane can be missed or misinterpreted. Studies with 3D reconstructions of 2D ultrasound techniques including SR imaging have been performed in animals including in rodent kidneys, rabbit lymph nodes and different rodent tumors [ 12 , 13 , 15 , 52 , 53 ]. The 3D reconstructions give a more complete morphological examination, but do not allow MB tracking in the elevational plane or motion compensation in all three directions.…”

“…In addition, vascular permeability can be assessed by measuring the accumulation of a labeled solute in the surrounding tissue [ 3 , 151 ]. To evaluate in vivo vasculature, Demené et al used ultrafast Doppler tomography (UFD-T) [ 1 , 152 ].…”

“…Novel imaging techniques such as ultrafast imaging and ultrafast Doppler techniques enable exquisitely detailed images and volumes of tumor vascularity to be built up even from vessels with very slow flow which are difficult to locate with standard Doppler techniques [7].…”
