2MASS Extended Source Catalog: Overview and Algorithms

Abstract: The 2 Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) will observe over one-million galaxies and extended Galactic sources covering the entire sky at wavelengths between 1 and 2 microns. The survey catalog will have both high completeness and reliability down to J = 15.0 and Ks = 13.5 mag, equivalent to 1.6 mJy and 2.9 mJy, respectively. This paper describes the basic algorithms used to detect and characterize extended sources in the 2MASS database and catalog. Critical procedures include tracking the point spread function, ima… Show more

“…We mask pixels with E(B − V) ≥ 0.1, and regions at galactic latitudes |b| < 20 • to exclude potentially contaminated regions near the Galactic plane (Schlegel, Finkbeiner & Davis 1998). These conservative limits result in a data set deeper than the 2MASS Extended Source Catalog (Jarrett et al 2000) and more uniform than WISE (Kovács et al 2013). These galaxies have been matched with PS1 objects within a 50 • × 50 • area centred on the CS, except for a Dec. ≥ −28.0 cut to conform to the PS1 boundary.…”

“…Its parent sample, the 2MASS Extended Source Catalogue (XSC, Jarrett et al 2000) includes over 1.6 million resolved sources (mostly galaxies), detected on most of the sky except for the highly confused Galactic Bulge, and provides precise astro-and photometric information, the latter in three near-infrared (IR) bands, J, H and Ks. About 1 million of the 2MASS galaxies are within its approximate completeness limit of Ks 13.9 mag (Vega).…”
