We use the WISE-2MASS infrared galaxy catalog matched with Pan-STARRS1 (PS1) galaxies to search for a supervoid in the direction of the Cosmic Microwave Background Cold Spot. Our imaging catalog has median redshift z ≃ 0.14, and we obtain photometric redshifts from PS1 optical colours to create a tomographic map of the galaxy distribution. The radial profile centred on the Cold Spot shows a large low density region, extending over 10's of degrees. Motivated by previous Cosmic Microwave Background results, we test for underdensities within two angular radii, 5 • , and 15 • . The counts in photometric redshift bins show significantly low densities at high detection significance, ∼ > 5σ and ∼ > 6σ, respectively, for the two fiducial radii. The line-of-sight position of the deepest region of the void is z ≃ 0.15 − 0.25. Our data, combined with an earlier measurement by Granett et al. (2010), are consistent with a large R void = (220 ± 50)h −1 Mpc supervoid with δ m ≃ −0.14 ± 0.04 centered at z = 0.22 ± 0.03. Such a supervoid, constituting at least a ≃ 3.3σ fluctuation in a Gaussian distribution of the ΛCDM model, is a plausible cause for the Cold Spot.

Using the 2MASS Photometric Redshift catalogue we perform a number of statistical tests aimed at detecting possible departures from statistical homogeneity and isotropy in the large-scale structure of the Universe. Making use of the angular homogeneity index, an observable proposed in a previous publication, as well as studying the scaling of the angular clustering and number counts with magnitude limit, we place constraints on the fractal nature of the galaxy distribution. We find that the statistical properties of our sample are in excellent agreement with the standard cosmological model, and that it reaches the homogeneous regime significantly faster than a class of fractal models with dimensions D < 2.75. As part of our search for systematic effects, we also study the presence of hemispherical asymmetries in our data, finding no significant deviation beyond those allowed by the concordance model.

Constraints on Feedback in the Local Universe: The Relation Between Star Formation and Agn Activity in Early-Type Galaxies

We address the relation between star formation and active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity in a sample of 231 nearby (0.0002 < z < 0.0358) early-type galaxies by carrying out a multi-wavelength study using archival observations in the UV, IR, and radio. Our results indicate that early-type galaxies in the current epoch are rarely powerful AGNs, with P 10 WHz 22 1 < -for a majority of the galaxies. Only massive galaxies are capable of hosting powerful radio sources while less massive galaxies are hosts to lower radio power sources. Evidence of ongoing star formation is seen in approximately 7% of the sample. The star formation rate (SFR) of these galaxies is less than 0.1 M e yr −1 . They also tend to be radio faint (P 10 WHzThere is a nearly equal fraction of star-forming galaxies in radio faint (P 10 WHz 22 1 < -) and radio bright galaxies (P 10 WHz 22 1  -) suggesting that both star formation and radio mode feedback are constrained to be very low in our sample. We notice that our galaxy sample and the Brightest Cluster Galaxies follow similar trends in radio power versus SFR. This may be produced if both radio power and SFR are related to stellar mass.
