2D-FEA Based Design Study of Salient Rotor Three-Phase Permanent Magnet Flux Switching Machine with Concentrated Winding

Abstract: This paper presents a new structure of permanent magnet flux switching machine (PMFSM) with multiple different sizes of rotor pole width. A robust single piece salient rotor is used to modulate and switch the flux linkage polarity in the armature winding and become the fundamental mechanism of these types of machines. The methodology of two-dimensional (2-D) finite element analysis (FEA) is used to evaluate the electromagnetic performance of coil test including flux line distributions, three phase flux linkage… Show more

“…For this reason, hybrid electric scooter was developed [6][7][8][9]. Hybrid electric vehicles are automobiles using equipped with combustion engine using fossil oil and electric motor together, for propulsion drive [10][11][12][13]. Electric motor consists of two major components with magnetic coupling, receives input electrical quantities of voltage and current for mechanical output torque and speed [14,15].…”

“…For IPMSM, it has high torque density and power density, but has a complex design structure because permanent magnets (PMs) are inserted inside the rotor with assembly lacking mechanical strength and limiting motor performance at high temperature condition [16,21]. Moreover, the hybrid excitation flux switching motor (HEFSM) [10,17] was developed to overcome the disadvantages of former motors in terms of copper loss reduction, simple shape to ease design enhancement for improved torque with less permanent magnet volume usage [17,23]. While, HEFSM was able to manage magnet temperature rise, it has numerous disadvantages namely; complicated design structure, requires external circuit connections for secondary excitation, reduced slot area and low over-load capability resulting from heavy saturation [24][25][26][27].…”

“…FSM was introduced in 1956 [6] and has attracted significance attention in electric propulsion. Generally, FSM is designated into three [7][8][9]. The FSPMM has attracted so much interest due to its advantages of loss-free excitation and elimination of connections to external stationary electric circuits, thereby recording less copper loss.…”

“…However, investigation on the PMFSM has, for the most part, centered on the electromagnetic examination and optimization of the inward rotor type machines with scarcely gave careful consideration to the external rotor PMFSM [17][18][19].…”
