Atlas ofSchistosoma mansonilong non-coding RNAs and their expression correlation to protein-coding genes

Abstract: Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been widely discovered in several organisms with the help of high-throughput RNA sequencing. LncRNAs are over 200 nt-long transcripts that do not have protein-coding (PC) potential, having been reported in model organisms to act mainly on the overall control of PC gene expression. Little is known about the functionality of lncRNAs in evolutionarily ancient non-model metazoan organisms, like Schistosoma mansoni, the parasite that causes schistosomiasis, one of the most preval… Show more

“…While some of them surely represent assembly artifacts, others might be functionally relevant. According to the recent publications [66][67][68][69][70][71] long non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) are one of the important regulators of gene expression and indispensable components of genetic networks. Analysis of the diversity and roles of non-coding RNAs in the Psilostomatidae is, therefore, a promising research direction for the future.…”

“…The involvement of specific lncR-NAs in hepatic diseases has been described, and hepatic stellate cells trans-differentiation is regulated by different lncRNAs [19][20][21] A previous study employed different tools to study differential gene expression patterns occurring in response to Schistosoma infections [22]. Recently, Schistosoma lncRNAs have also been investigated for their potential functions [23][24][25][26][27][28][29]. However, lncRNAs in Schistosoma japonicum-infected mouse liver and spleen samples have not been investigated by RNA-Seq.…”

“…High-throughput next-generation sequencing has brought about the discovery of thousands of noncoding RNA genes (ncRNAs), such as short, long, and circular RNAs, over the last several decades. Also, several studies have been conducted for identification of both miRNAs and lncRNAs in Schistosoma genomes [ 25 27 ].…”
