“…Today, GOBI is committed to supporting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and in particular SDG 14, 3 Aichi Target 11 4 and United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution 72/249 on the development of an international legally binding instrument under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ). The data collated by GOBI partners have informed the work of the Convention on Migratory Species 5 (Kot, Halpin, Cleary, & Dunn, 2014), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization report on expanding the purview of the World Heritage Convention to ABNJ (Freestone, Laffoley, Douvere, & Badman, 2016), and efforts to create frameworks for the designation of no-mining areas within regional environmental management plans (Dunn, Van Dover et al, 2018).
