Change in Activities of Daily Living in the Year Following a Stroke

Abstract: To promote ADLs of stroke patients, NIHSS score at admission, gender, and age should be included as important predictors of stroke care management. The results highlight that the rehabilitation of stroke patients should be focused more on ADLs at 1-6 months poststroke.

“…Activities of daily living are independent and account for approximately 50% to 80% after 6 months 14 . It was reported that 3 months after a stroke is the key period for recovery 10,15 and functional recovery slows significantly after 6 months after stroke, 11,23 which is similar to our research results. It means that patients entering chronic diseases from the acute stage of stroke require long-term care.…”

“…Stroke is a leading cause of death [1] and lost productivity worldwide as measured by disability-adjusted life years [2]. Upper extremity (UE) sensorimotor impairments after stroke, such as weakness, abnormal muscle tone or motor synergies, pain, and hypersensitivity or hyposensitivity, are prevalent and persistent [3] and may further affect activities of daily living [4] and quality of life after stroke [5]. Robot training (RT) is emerging as a novel approach to support therapists in their efforts to provide high-intensity, repetitive, and task-specific interventions.…”
