Immunomodulation Effects of Schizonepeta tenuifolia Briq. on the IgE‐Induced Allergic Model of RBL‐2H3 Cells

Abstract: Schizonepeta tenuifolia (ST) Briq. is a traditional herbal medicine commonly used to treat allergic skin diseases, where the inflammation process is closely related to symptom severity. This study aimed to explore the immunomodulatory effect of ST by using immunoglobulin E- (IgE-) stimulated RBL-2H3 cell cultures, a common cell line for studying mast cell degranulation and inflammatory cytokine release in vitro. After stimulating the RBL-2H3 cells with IgE, ST at concentrations of 10, 50, or 100 μg/mL was adde… Show more

“…Inhalable microparticles of Lonicera japonica decrease the levels of tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 in bronchoalveolar fluid and inflammatory cells in peripheral blood, induce recovery of elastin and collagen distribution, and reduce caspase-3 expression in lung tissue (24). Schizonepeta tenuifolia suppresses immunoglobulin E-induced allergic reactions at the cellular level, and ameliorates inflammatory cytokines and eosinophilic inflammation (25,26). These results suggest that HX110 can prevent the development of chronic airway disease that occurs as chronic inflammation persists.…”

“…On the other hand, Schizonepeta tenuifolia demonstrated a significant reduction (P < 0.05) of IFN-γ, IL-4 and IL-13 in IgE-induced allergic model of RBL-2H3 cells with 100 µg/ml of aqueous extract. In the same study, S. tenuifolia aqueous extract showed no cytotoxicity even at a higher concentration up to 1,000 µg/ml (Lin et al, 2018). However, a more thorough and detailed toxicological investigation is required to develop a more evidence-based safety profile.…”

“…Spica Schizonepetae is first recorded in the Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica, an ancient classic book in the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It possesses various pharmacologica activities, such as antitumor, anti-inflammation, analgesic, anti-virus, and bacteriostasis [2][3][4]. In clinical research, Spica Schizonepetae or the ancient Chinese medicine formulas with Spica Schizonepetae as the main medicine (like Zhisou powder, Yinqiao powder and some empirical formulas), have also been used to treat lung cancer and the related diseases [5].…”
