“…In recent years, the rest of processed fish such as cartilage has drawn considerable attention in tissue engineering applications. Several studies have been focused on GAG extraction from cartilage including chondroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid and dermatan sulfate 24‐29 while ECM‐ derived scaffolds from fish cartilage are not reported yet.…”

“…The sturgeon endoskeleton is only composed of white cartilage, suggesting that cartilage tissues of sturgeon may be able to maintain chondrocytic phenotype of chondrocytes and inhibit the calcification of cartilage (Viegas, Conceição, Fazenda, Simes, & Cancela, 2010). And chondroitin sulfate isolated from the sturgeon cartilage ameliorates pain induced osteoarthritis and suppresses the transcription of metalloproteinase genes that cause degradation of cartilage ECM (Sun et al., 2018). Together, it is hypothesized that the cartilage ECM of sturgeon may inhibit chondrocyte hypertrophy and maintain the chondrocytic phenotype of chondrocyte.…”

“…Chondroitin sulfate (CS), a glycosaminoglycan that is widely extracted from animal and fish cartilage, is an essential component of the extracellular matrix ( 148 ). A study indicated that carp chondroitin sulfate increased MMP and inhibited the levels of Caspase-3 and Caspase-9 by reducing mitochondrial fission, which decreased chondrocyte apoptosis ( 33 ).…”
