Cytopenia in adult brucellosis patients

Abstract: Background & objectives:Brucellosis can lead to haematological abnormalities including cytopenia confusing with haematological malignancies. The aim of this study was to compare the main characteristics of brucellosis patients without cytopenia (Group 1) and with cytopenia (Group 2).Methods:This five-year period study which was performed in two referral hospitals in Turkey, included all adult brucellosis patients. Abnormally, low counts of leucocyte or haemoglobin or platelets in a patient were considered as c… Show more

“…In China, a case of subdural empyema complicated by intracerebral abscess due to Brucella infection was effectively treated with antibiotic therapy (ceftriaxone, doxycycline, rifapentine) [ 108 ]. In line with this, several reports suggested the combination therapy of doxycycline and rifampicin for six weeks is enough to eradicate Brucella infection, as well as associated complications [ 46 , 109 , 110 , 111 ]. This combination of doxycycline and rifampicin has also been proven experimentally [ 112 ].…”

“…In about 30% of cases, there is focalization of the infection [9,16,17]. Hematological involvement with anemia and leukopenia, like our patient presented, is relatively common [18]. Although gastrointestinal complaints are common in infections by Brucella spp., documented specific ileum lesions caused by Brucella spp.…”

“…In developed countries, infection most often occurs via occupational exposure, such as inhalation of infectious aerosols in microbiology laboratories [ 6 ]. However, it can also be acquired through direct skin or mucosal contact with infected livestock [ 6 , 7 ].…”

“…Pancytopenia may occur in up to 2–14% of affected individuals [ 5 ]. There are no disease-specific findings to distinguish brucellosis-induced cytopenias from noninfectious etiologies, and therefore, brucellosis is frequently misdiagnosed as a primary hematologic disease or malignancy [ 7 ]. Fortunately, hematologic manifestations typically resolve with treatment of the underlying brucellosis.…”
