Men's re-placement: Social practices in a Men's Shed

Abstract: Transitions into retirement can be difficult at the best of times. Many men find themselves having to reflect on who they are and what their lives are about. Their access to social supports and material resources are often disrupted. Men's Sheds offer a space where retired men can actively pursue wellbeing, and respond to disruption and loneliness through emplaced community practices. This paper draws on ethnographic research in a Men's Shed in Auckland, New Zealand in order to explore the social practices thr… Show more

“…The notion of being/feeling insufficiently masculine as a cause of loneliness, though, would appear to suggest a complex situation where being emotionally candid can be a cause of loneliness too. Nevertheless, some studies, albeit all of which were focused on older men, have suggested this can be overcome, particularly in social settings where men can take part in 'constructive' activities inflected with a 'supportive' atmosphere (46,75,76,78,89).…”

“…Nine of the 18 studies in table nine were qualitative studies exploring older men and loneliness (41,42,(58)(59)(60)(75)(76)(77)(78). Most of these acknowledged isolating life events such as widowhood, retirement, a loss of mobility (or other isolating health issue), and/or moving into specialist housing, to be more common with age (42,58,59,(75)(76)(77).…”

“…In recognition of the positive impact social connection has on men's well‐being, there are not‐for‐profit (NFP) organisations linking men to an array of programs (AMHF, 2022 ). These include the national (Australian) Men's Shed Association, in which men work ‘shoulder to shoulder’, then meet around the lunch table in an inclusive and supportive environment (Anstiss et al, 2018 ; Mackenzie et al, 2017 ; Waling & Fildes, 2017 ; Wilson & Cordier, 2013 ). Men are volunteering to organise and actively engage with each other, such as going for a group walk with the motto of ‘no man walks alone’ (TheManWalk, 2022 ), or attending a regular monthly dinner commitment to meet with others within an accepting framework (Men'sTable, 2022 ), or participating in a one‐to‐one mentoring dyad for a minimum of 6 months (MentoringMen, 2022 ; Mentors4Men, 2022 ).…”

“…Most notably, Sheds are typically located centrally in villages and towns, and are tailored to the needs of men within that specific community context (Golding et al, 2015). They are inclusive of men from many different backgrounds, therefore being particularly beneficial for those socially excluded, unemployed or affected by negative life experiences (Anstiss et al, 2018;Wilson and Cordier, 2013). Further, international studies have shown that they successfully attract hard to reach older men who may find it difficult to engage in conventional healthcare, employment or education (Golding et al, 2007;McGrath et al, 2021).…”
