Temporomandibular disorders are a multifactorial disease. Occlusal support and the number of teeth in dentition have significant effects on the masticatory system. The current study aims to review the role of occlusal support in association with findings of temporomandibular disorders. Data sources were PubMed, Web of Science and Google Scholar, with 1411 citations published over the period 1992–2019. The selection criteria stipulated that articles must have reported the association between the number of teeth, occlusal unit, occlusal support and temporomandibular disorders. A total of 15 full-text articles was finally accessed for eligibility in the current review. The studies on temporomandibular disorders were collected from various sources, including articles reporting temporomandibular disorder symptoms ( n=1), temporomandibular disorder signs ( n=5), temporomandibular joint osseous changes ( n=1), temporomandibular joint dysfunction using the Helkimo index ( n=2), and temporomandibular disorder classification ( n=6). Of these articles, significant associations were found between: the number of missing teeth and temporomandibular disorders ( n=5); the number of occlusal units and occlusal supports and temporomandibular disorders ( n=3); the position of the lost occlusal units and temporomandibular disorders ( n=1). Loss of the occlusal unit has more impact on temporomandibular disorders than the loss of posterior teeth. The total loss of unilateral occlusal support seems to be an aetiological factor for temporomandibular disorders, and maintenance of balanced posterior occlusal support has a role in the prevention and management of temporomandibular disorders.

This study aimed to investigate factors associated with dental prosthesis procedures by oral health teams (OHTs) in the Brazilian primary health care in 2013–2014, who participated in the National Program for Improving Access and Quality of Primary Health Care (PMAQ-AB). This is an analytical cross-sectional study using a questionnaire with dichotomous questions applied in 18,114 OHTs. The dependent variable studied was making any type of prosthesis (removable or fixed). Independent variables involved issues related to human resources and health service management. Data were submitted to simple and multiple binary logistic regression with odds ratio calculation, 95% confidence intervals, and p-values. Most OHTs (57%) do not perform any dental prosthesis. The teams that are more likely to perform dental prostheses have human resources-related characteristics, such as professionals admitted through public examinations (OR 1.25, 95% CI 1.14–1.36) and those involved in permanent education (OR 1.13, 95% CI 1.02–1.26). Moreover, OHTs with a more organized work process and that receive more significant support from municipal management are more likely to perform dental prostheses (p < 0.05). The oral health teams which tended to provide the most dental prostheses to benefit patients were; hired as civil servants, had a municipal career plan, involved all members of the oral health team, and trained undergraduate dental students from outreach programs. Better organizational support and improved work incentives may be needed to get the majority of oral health teams to start providing dental prostheses to their patients.

Selective Laser Sintering versus Selective Laser Melting and Computer Aided Design – Computer Aided Manufacturing in Double Crowns Retention

Purpose: This in vitro study aimed at ascertaining the retention forces for telescopic crowns fabricated with Selective Laser Manufacturing (SLM) and Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) additive technologies, and Computer Aided Design -Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD-CAM) subtractive technology, by using suitable materials for each. Materials and Methods: Full-factorial design was employed for experimental testing, considering the following three factors: (a) inner crown material -technology (zirconia -CAD-CAM; metal-alloy -SLS; metal-alloy -SLM); (b) tooth type (canine or molar); (c) wet vs. dry conditions (i.e. either with or without artificial saliva). The roughness of the inner crowns was analyzed through atomic force microscopy. Three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied for statistical analysis, followed by Tukey's post-hoc comparisons between the crown types. Results: The retention force mean values were between 3.8 N (dry, SLM) and 14.8 N (artificial saliva, SLS), with statistically significant (p<0.001) differences between the three types of inner crowns and interaction with the tooth type. No significant interaction was found between crown or tooth types and the wet vs. dry testing conditions. The zirconia crowns' retention force was significantly (p<0.001) higher compared to similar SLM crowns, with 95% CI (3.62; 5.55) N for the differences. Zirconia was significantly (p<0.001) less retentive compared to similar SLS crowns, with 95% CI (-5.99; -4.06) N for the differences. The roughness decrease and subsequent loss of retention force was the largest in zirconia. Conclusions: The SLS inner crowns showed the best retention, followed by zirconia and SLM inner crows.
