“…Burning mouth syndrome has long been studied and many therapeutic modalities have been evaluated. However, to date, consensus on the standard for its management does not exist (de Souza et al., ). A recent Cochrane review confirmed the lack of RCTs that provide sufficient guidance to clinicians on effective treatment interventions (McMillan et al., ).…”

“…However, their use in orofacial pain research has been limited (Chen & Lee, ; Haythornthwaite, ) and the utilization in BMS RCTs has not been assessed. Consequently, standardization in the reporting of outcomes in BMS RCTs is lacking, and despite the large number of RCTs published in this field, systematic reviews have been unable to draw conclusive results and provide strong recommendations (Coculescu, Manole, Coculescu, & Purcarea, ; Hakeem, Fitzpatrick, Bhattacharyya, Islam, & Cohen, ; McMillan et al, ; Patton et al, ; de Souza et al, ).…”

“…Consequently, standardization in the reporting of outcomes in BMS RCTs is lacking, and despite the large number of RCTs published in this field, systematic reviews have been unable to draw conclusive results and provide strong recommendations (Coculescu, Manole, Coculescu, & Purcarea, 2015;Hakeem, Fitzpatrick, Bhattacharyya, Islam, & Cohen, 2018;McMillan et al, 2016;Patton et al, 2007;de Souza et al, 2018). To the authors' knowledge, this is the first investigation to systematically assess the reporting of outcome measures in BMS RCTs and the adherence to the IMMPACT core domains and their recommended tools of assessment (Dworkin et al, 2005;Turk et al, 2003).…”

“…Many papers have considered anxiolytics to be the gold standard treatment of BMS, but clinicians are aware that very often people with BMS present for their first visit complaining of oral burning sensation when they are already receiving anxiolytic medication (Schiavone et al, ; de Souza, Mármora, Rados, & Visioli, ).…”

“…Recent studies have shown how BMS could be related to central sensitization of an independent nociceptive pathway that might affect the GABAergic activity of the trigeminal nerve (Tan, Song, Dong, Somvanshi, & Cairns, 2014 Many papers have considered anxiolytics to be the gold standard treatment of BMS, but clinicians are aware that very often people with BMS present for their first visit complaining of oral burning sensation when they are already receiving anxiolytic medication (Schiavone et al, 2012;de Souza, Mármora, Rados, & Visioli, 2018).…”
