Probing the temporal dynamics of the exploration–exploitation dilemma of eye movements

Abstract: When scanning a visual scene, we are in a constant decision process regarding whether to further exploit the information content at the current fixation or to go on and explore the scene. The balance of these two processes determines the distribution of fixation durations. Using a gaze-contingent paradigm, we experimentally interrupt this process to probe its state. Here, we developed a guided-viewing task where only a single 3° aperture of an image ("bubble") is displayed. Subjects had to fixate the bubble fo… Show more

“…The 60 Hz refresh rate of the monitor may result in a small delay of screen refresh (∼17 ms). We use such a gaze contingent setup routinely and tested it thoroughly ( Ehinger et al, 2018 ). Further, in the present study the region of interest, i.e., the Model Area, was large and distant from the other areas, which makes detection of relevant fixations particularly fast and easy.…”

“…Fast sampling rates are important to shorten online delay for gaze-dependent experiments (e.g. Ehinger, Kaufhold & König, 2018) and increase accuracy of event onsets for example, EEG/ET co-registered experiments (Dimigen et al, 2011; Ehinger, König & Ossandón, 2015). In this paragraph we analyse the reported and effective sampling rates of both eye-trackers.…”

“…To avoid negative values for the likelihood we take the maximum between the subtraction and 0. Our assumption is that each fixation is chosen either from the local attention map described in Eq (2) or the global attention map described in Eq (4). This can be represented as a mixture model…”

“…Second, the decision process for an upcoming saccade target poses a dilemma: should the observer further exploit the information near the fovea or continue with exploration of other patches within the given scene? The latter problem is critical for scene viewing [3,4] and relevant to the broader field of cognitive processes in knowledge acquisition [5].…”
