Mediators of Behavior Change Maintenance in Physical Activity Interventions for Young and Middle-Aged Adults: A Systematic Review

Abstract: There were a number of methodological and statistical limitations in the evidence base. In future, prespecified formal mediation tests should be carried out and could be aided by a formal framework. Social and environmental variables should be considered in addition to intrapersonal variables. Improving knowledge of how to change hypothesized mediators, based on theory and evidence, will reveal how physical activity behavior change maintenance can be achieved. Maintenance research would be enhanced by establis… Show more

“…This may support the idea that participants were in the behavioral maintenance stage at six months, in line with the definition of behavior change maintenance adopted in previous systematic reviews (Murray et al, 2017(Murray et al, , 2018; (3) The measured short-term mediators were potentially less relevant for our sample, which had high daily step counts at baseline indicating that they may not have been 'initiating' physical activity behavior.…”

“…Despite this, mediation analyses are not always conducted (MacKinnon, Lockwood, Hoffman, West, & Sheets, 2002). Little is known about what triggers initiation and maintenance of physical activity behavior change and previous attempts at promoting physical activity have had limited success (Murray et al, 2017(Murray et al, , 2018).…”

“…Item 5 was designed to assess the stage of change on PAP behavior for PHC professionals, according to the stage of changes of the transtheoretical model [ 43 ]. This question was introduced because many studies have evaluated the lifestyle behavior changes in patients or people [ 44 , 45 ], although currently to produce changes towards positive healthy lifestyles for a long-term time is not recognized as an efficient strategy in HC settings [ 45 ]. The participants of the previous focus group interview sessions [ 12 ] showed a lack of awareness as the majority of their professional colleagues.…”
