Mental health history—a contributing factor for poorer outcomes in burn survivors

Abstract: BackgroundA pre-morbid mental health history is common in patients with severe burn injuries. This creates challenges in providing rehabilitation. The aim of this study is to cross examine the possible impact of psychological co-morbidities on outcomes.MethodsA notes audit was carried out examining patients that were admitted to Concord Hospital Burns Unit in a 3-year period (2010–2012). Patients with total body surface area (TBSA) of 20% or greater and aged between 16 and 50 years were included. Subjects were… Show more

“…20 This further led to the idea of a 3D printed customized wound-healing template consisting of ZnO NPs homogeneously dispersed within an alginate template that can be designed readily and made to fit the exact size and depth of the wound using contour printing. 21 3D printing is a layer by layer addition of material allowing for the creation of unique shapes and offering the customizability important biomedical sectors tissue engineering or pharmaceutics. Several different techniques can be employed in 3D printing.…”

“…These stages overlap and interact with each other in a complex way that ultimately affects the healing process. Bacterial infection could interfere with the normal healing process and lead to delayed wound closure 57,58. By conjugating with KR-12 peptide, ESM/KR 600 possessed good antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, including multi-drug-resistant bacteria (Figure 3), which could effectively protect the wounds from bacterial invasion and cloning, maintaining a natural and non-septic microenvironment for new tissue formation 1.…”

“…The relationship of mental illness with burn injuries is bidirectional. Psychiatric morbidity in patients with burns has been reported to increase duration of hospital stay, rates of re-grafting, time to return to satisfactory daily functioning levels and lead to poor health related quality of life (6,7,26).…”
