Anti-cancer effect of toosendanin and its underlying mechanisms

Abstract: Toosendanin (TSN) is a triterpenoid purified from the medicinal herb Melia toosendan Sieb. et Zucc and has been used as an insecticide for decades. Recent studies have attracted increasing interest of TSN due to its novel anti-cancer effect in diverse cancer models. The broad spectrum anti-cancer activity suggests that TSN inhibits multiple pathways/targets that are critical for cancer cell survival and proliferation. Our recent study indicated that TSN has anti-cancer effect in glioblastoma through induction … Show more

“…Moreover, Zahang et al [ 71 ] found that sulfur significantly enhanced the tolerance of oil seed rape exposed to Cr stress by activating several detoxification mechanisms such as the ascorbate-glutathione (AsA-GSH) enzyme defense system and GSH production. Kumaresan et al [ 72 ] studied sulfur stress on Arthrospira sp.…”

“…GSTs are involved in the detoxification mechanisms, and 15 GST- Data are presented as means ± SD (n = 3) in each column, and for each concentration, means with different letters are significantly different (p < 0.05) like isoenzymes (Cr GSTS) were found in the model species of green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii [70]. “…Previous studies have reported that TSN inhibits a number of pathways and targets that are crucial to cancer cell survival and proliferation ( 4 ), such as TSN induced apoptosis of cells through the β-catenin and MAPK pathways ( 6 , 5 ). Zhang et al ( 27 ) has previously shown that TSN selectively inhibits U87 and C6 glioma cell proliferation and induces apoptosis through oestrogen receptor-dependent machinery. In order to study the mechanism of TSN-induced apoptosis of human gastric cancer MKN-45 cells, the expression of apoptosis-related genes was examined.…”

“…Studies showed that Szechwan Chinaberry extracts exhibited biological activities in blocking neuromuscular junctions, antibotulism, and affecting efferent nerves, central nervous and the respiratory system [15][16][17] . Recently, several experts and scholars pointed out that Szechwan Chinaberry extracts have antineoplastic effects, including inhibition to hepatocellular carcinoma cells, human leukemia cells and human breast cancer cells, by primarily inducing the apoptosis of relevant cells [18][19][20] . In this paper, the Szechwan Chinaberry extracts were added at 25, 50 and 75 nM concentrations to MCF-7 cells.…”
