Transcatheter mitral valve intervention: an emerging treatment for mitral regurgitation

Abstract: Mitral regurgitation (MR) is a valvular heart disease associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Transcatheter mitral valve intervention (TMVI) repairs or replaces the mitral valve through small arterial and venous entry sites and so avoids risks associated with open heart surgery. Transcatheter devices targeting components of the mitral apparatus are being developed to repair or replace it. Numerous challenges remain including developing more adaptable devices and correction of multiple components o… Show more

“…Similarly, total mitral valve replacement is being supplanted when possible by mitral valve sparing procedures, including the use of various mitral valve clip devices. Pathology associated with these devices and procedures have been described [6,10,128,[139][140][141][142][143][144].…”

“…This is a safer way for patients because transcatheter therapy is mini invasive and avoids risks accompanied with open heart surgery. These techniques are developed for interventions on many parts of mitral valve apparatus (24). Regulation of blood pressure (BP) is under control of sympathetic nervous system (25).…”

“…Mitral valve regurgitation (MR) is the second most frequent valvular dysfunction in Europe, after aortic stenosis [1,2]. It is estimated that around 10% of population aged over 75 have moderate to severe MR [3]. It can be caused by structural abnormality of one or more components of the mitral valve (primary MR), or by the distortion of the mitral valve apparatus caused by left ventricle (LV) and/or left atrium (LA) remodelling (secondary MR) [4].…”

“…Severe MR is a major source of morbidity and mortality worldwide and a frequent cause of heart failure, being associated with unfavourable prognosis when remains untreated [ 5 ]. Despite surgery is the treatment of choice for patients with severe MR, approximately 50% of patients are not eligible for surgery due to comorbidities [ 3 , 6 ]. In the recent years, transcatheter mitral valve implantation (TMVI) is emerging as an effective alternative to surgery in high-risk surgical candidates [ 3 ].…”
