Effect of nutritional status on arsenic and smokeless tobacco induced genotoxicity, sperm abnormality and oxidative stress in mice in vivo

Abstract: Our study indicates that sufficient levels of dietary protein appear to reduce the long-term arsenic and smokeless tobacco-induced toxicity in mice test system, as compared to lower or deficient amount of protein in the diet. This observation has implications and invites further studies especially epidemiological studies in the human population exposed to arsenic in South East Asian countries. Environ. Mol. “…Our study proved that Chamaemelum nobile extract maintains antioxidant defense systems and does not affect lipid peroxidation since there is no significant variation in the EA group compared to the control one. Sensitization by OVA showed a very high significant increase (p ≤0.001) of MDA levels in the lungs and erythrocytes, and a very high significant decrease (p ≤0.001) of the non-enzymatic antioxidant activity of reduced glutathione (GSH) which represents one of the many antioxidant defenses which is a factor involved in the protection of various organs against the damages that are induced by oxidants during the inflammatory process (44). Its reduction is due to its high use by GST in the detoxification of H2O2 and the detoxification of active metabolites through the involvement of GPx.…”

“…Due to the local geological features, arsenic can be found in natural water sources including rivers and groundwater. For instance, arsenic in groundwater is a substantial public health concern in many regions of South Asia [22,23].…”

“…Organ damage and possible death are possible in acute arsenic intoxication. On the other hand, malignant tumors may develop as a result of the deformity of the extremities brought on by long-term exposure to arsenic [23,27]. Ingestion and inhalation are the two most common ways to be exposed to arsenic, and these are also the ways that cause health issues most commonly.…”

“…The cytogenotoxic potential of either AN or SG has been studied in Chinese hamster ovarian cells (Dave et al, 1992a), oral mucosal fibroblast (Jeng et al, 2001), human buccal epithelial cells (Sundqvist et al, 1989; Kausar et al, 2009; Das et al, 2022; Giri et al, 2021), human blood lymphocytes (Dave et al, 1992b; Kumpawat et al, 2003; Giri et al, 2021), and mouse bone marrow cells (Kumpawat et al, 2003, Das et al, 2016, Das et al, 2018; Das et al, 2022). However, the role of AN and SG‐mediated genotoxicity and cytotoxicity alone or in combination during early embryonic development has not been studied to date.…”
