Quantitative MRI evaluation of whole abdomen adipose tissue volumes in healthy volunteers—validation of technique and implications for clinical studies

Abstract: Objectives: To explore 'whole abdomen' MRI methods for quantifying adipose tissue volumes and to establish associations with body mass index (BMI) and measurement reproducibility -relative to existing 'partial abdomen' methods. Methods:Fifteen healthy volunteers were scanned on a 3.0T MRI scanner using a double-echo three-point-Dixon gradient echo sequence. Whole abdomen volumes were acquired via three separate scans ('supine 1', 'supine 2' and 'prone'). Segmentation was applied to derive (i) 'whole abdomen' v… Show more

“…Another strength of this study is that we used multiple measures of adiposity with different levels of granularity, ranging from anthropometric markers to overall body fatness and regional fat depots (superficial and deep). Importantly, when quantifying abdominal adipose tissue, we used whole abdomen volume which is more reproducible than partial abdomen measures or a single CT image.…”

“…To further separate the VAT from other structures and organs within the abdominal cavity, a threshold was used. Only voxels above the cutoff value were considered adipose tissue and included in the VAT ROI [ 25 , 26 ].…”

“…Инструментальные методы оценки степени висцерального ожирения занимают важное значение в диагностике и стратификации риска сердечно-сосудистых заболеваний [6]. Так, эталонным методом считаются томографические методики -компьютерная и магнитно-резонансная томография (МРТ) [7], а по некоторым данным, МРТ может превосходить компьютерную томографию в точности измерений [8].…”
