Acute myositis

Abstract: Docetaxel is an antimicrotubules cytotoxic agent prescribed widely by medical oncologists in multiple tumor types (breast, lung, prostate, stomach, head, and neck). However, the side effects of docetaxel are numerous (cytopenia, peripheral edema, myalgia, arthralgia, alopecia, and sensitive neuropathy) and recent concerns have been raised about neutropenic enterocolitis in France. Here, we report the case of a 57-year-old patient with metastatic prostatic cancer, who developed a severe myositis and fasciitis g… Show more

“…Although DTX has been used in treatment of many cancer patients, high dose of DTX induces severe side effects including anemia, peripheral neuropathy, and nausea. Moreover, low sensitivity and acquired drug resistance of DTX are still problems [ 38 , 39 ]. For enhancing the effectiveness of DTX, studies about the combination therapy have been investigated in clinical models, especially in TNBC patients [ 40 , 41 ].…”

“…A prompt diagnosis of rhabdomyolysis will facilitate proper treatment and rehabilitation. Considerations for differential diagnosis should be taken into account as the patient did receive pegfilgrastim which can carry the side effect of bone pain and both docetaxel and cyclophosphamide are cited to cause arthralgias [ 9 , 11 , 15 ]. As many rehabilitation professionals may be practicing in an ambulatory or outpatient clinic, lab values such as CPK may not be readily available.…”

“…Docetaxel and cyclophosphamide are often delivered as combination therapy. Docetaxel anhydrous belongs to the class of chemotherapy drugs called plant alkaloids, which are cell-cycle specific [ 9 ]. This antimicrotubule agent disrupts the cell’s apparatus for dividing and eventually leads to cell death [ 9 ].…”

“…It has been shown to be most frequently associated with leukemia and lymphoma (1). NE is less common in solid tumors due to treatment-related short-term neutropenia, but has been shown to be associated with taxane-based chemotherapy (2). In patients receiving chemotherapy due to solid tumors, the incidence of NE has been reported to be 5% and mortality rate has been reported to be 30%-50% (3).…”
