Continuous flow adsorption of ciprofloxacin by using a nanostructured chitin/graphene oxide hybrid material

Abstract: A novel nanostructured material was successfully developed by combining a chitin matrix with graphene oxide nanosheets (Chi:nGO) and then used for the continuous flow adsorption of ciprofloxacin. The spectroscopic characterization indicated that none covalent interaction between both components would be occurring and the introduction of nGO did not interfere in chitin nanostructure rearrangement during gelling and later drying. SEM images and Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry results showed a wide pore size distri… Show more

“…This conrmed the reduction of GO by vitamin C. 37 The respective shis of peaks from 1629 and 1329 cm À1 to 1582 and 1317 cm À1 demonstrated the successful introduction of CGH to the ZnO-GO/CGH. 38 The FTIR spectra also conrmed that ZnO-GO/CGH had some oxygen-containing functional groups and defect sites due to the synergistic effect between GO and ZnO.…”

“…González et al generated chitin/GO nanocomposites (3:1 weight ratio) by wetspinning to study their adsorption performance for ciprofloxacin in batch experiments by assessing the effect of the flow rate, pH value and sodium as well as calcium concentrations (water quality parameters) [77]. Scanning electron micrographs of the as-synthesized nanocomposites revealed a very broad pore size distribution with micro-, sub-microand nanoscopic pore sizes ranging from 10 nm up to 10 µm.…”

“…The recent advances in the development of polymeric nanocomposites demonstrate that the nanofillers influences the structure of the hosting polymer. Several studies reported that nanoparticles can induce structural changes in a polysaccharide network when a composite is formed [17,18]. In example, changes in crystallinity and hardness have been reported by introducing MNPs in chitin/cashew gum composites [19].…”
