“…Viral dynamics in the human population is related to host, viral and environmental determinants, whose complexity is not well understood, especially when different viruses are involved in a pathological condition. Accordingly, respiratory infections in RS can be caused by a plethora of pathogens, including IAV, IBV, hPIV, hRSV, hAdV, and metapneumovirus; in this sense, our findings show that hPIV activity is high during fall and spring, just before and after influenza and hRSV season, which occur in winter (from May to August) . Similarly, a study analyzed the circulation of hPIV, hRSV, and IAV in Fortaleza (Northeast Brazil) and found an inverse association between hPIV, hRSV, and IAV circulation .…”

“…There are studies that describe the main symptoms in positive cases: cough, fever, dyspnea, sore throat, hoarseness of voice, rhinorrhea, myalgia, anorexia, vomiting, irritability, pharyngitis, otitis media, conjunctivitis, diarrhea and lethargy. These results align with the findings of this study [16,17,26].…”

“…Females were the most affected, according to one study; the female gender is a risk factor for developing a severe disease due to HMPV [16]. Studies show that the highest prevalence of HMPV occurs in females [17].…”

“…The first may be explained by widely documented local variation in annual hMPV circulation, 29 exacerbated here by limited sampling during the expected hMPV season, usually late winter/early spring as reported previously in São Paulo. 30 The absence of FLU seasonality, usually related to rainy seasons in tropical and subtropical regions, 31 may have been facilitated by the population characteristics of the Brazilian slum allowing continued FLU transmission and maintenance over relatively dryer seasons.…”
