Microbial Diversity in the Eukaryotic SAR Clade: Illuminating the Darkness Between Morphology and Molecular Data

Abstract: Despite their diversity and ecological importance, many areas of the SAR-Stramenopila, Alveolata, and Rhizaria-clade are poorly understood as the majority (90%) of SAR species lack molecular data and only 5% of species are from well-sampled families. Here, we review and summarize the state of knowledge about the three major clades of SAR, describing the diversity within each clade and identifying synapomorphies when possible. We also assess the "dark area" of SAR: the morphologically described species that are… Show more

“…Key characteristics of Opisthokonta include synthesis of extracellular chitin, cyst/spore/cell walls of filamentous growth, hyphae, and the extracellular digestion of substrates (Adl et al, 2018). Only 5% of SAR are from well sampled families making them a poorly understood phyla (Grattepanche et al, 2018). SAR is made up of Stramenopila, Alveolate, and Rhizaria.…”

“…Most importantly, it confirms that Telonemia is a bona fide eukaryotic phylum, at the same phylogenetic level as other major phyla such as the Sar members (Stramenopila, Alveolata, and Rhizaria) (Burki et al 2007;Hackett et al 2007;Rodriguez-Ezpeleta, Brinkmann, Burger, et al 2007 . Telonemia thus appears crucial for understanding the early evolution of the Sar group, a globally distributed and highly diverse assemblage of eukaryotes likely containing the majority of protist lineages (del Campo et al 2014;de Vargas et al 2015;Grattepanche et al 2018).…”

“…The SAR supergroup contains a high diversity of lineages that include many important photosynthetic lineages (e.g. diatoms and kelp), and important parasites of animals (e.g., Plasmodium , the causative agent of malaria) and plants (e.g., oomycetes, or water molds) (26). Phytophthora is a large oomycete genus (>160 species found to date) and contains some of the most devastating plant pathogens that destroy a wide range of plants important in agriculture, forestry, ornamental and recreational plantings, and natural ecosystems (27).…”
