A Young Boy With Persistent Nodules And Hoarseness: A Rare Presentation Of Nodular Secondary Syphilis

Abstract: Syphilis is a venereal disease caused by treponema pallidum, historically known as "great mimicker" because of its variable presentations. Secondary syphilis usually presents with maculopapular or papulosquamous rash. Rare manifestations include papulonodular, annular and lichenoid lesions. Nodules are usually found in benign tertiary syphilis. We present a case of a young boy who presented with five months' history of nodular skin lesions and hoarseness of voice. Venereal disease research laboratory (VDRL) wa… Show more

“…What is more, VDR knockout in mice prevents initiation of new hair cycles following morphogenesis . Evidence also suggests vitamin D deficiency is associated with female hair loss disorders and AA . Hair growth was shown to increase with the presence of synthetic vitamin D3 analogues (calcitriol/calcipotriol) in alopecia totalis, AA and in chemotherapy‐induced alopecia mouse models .…”

“…[172] Evidence also suggests vitamin D deficiency is associated with female hair loss disorders [170] and AA. [174][175][176] Hair growth was shown to increase with the presence of synthetic vitamin D3 analogues (calcitriol/calcipotriol) in alopecia totalis, [177] AA [178] and in chemotherapy-induced alopecia mouse models. [179] It could be suggested that dysfunction in the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway, which would alter levels of 7-DHC, might play a role in hair loss related to vitamin D3 deficiency.…”

“…The World Health Organization recommends benzathine penicillin G 2.4 million units once intramuscularly in the treatment of early syphilis (8). Besides, patients with nodular secondary syphilis who were treated with administration of benzathine penicillin G 2.4 million units weekly for two or three weeks have been reported (Table 1) (1)(2)(3)(4)6,7,9).…”

“…PS impacts the physical and mental health of patients, especially when it is associated with cardiovascular disease, obesity, mental and emotional issues, or other diseases. [1][2][3] Both the occurrence and development of PS are related to heredity, immunity, infection, metabolism, and other factors. [4] Immune dysfunction and interactions in the inflammatory cytokine network contribute significantly to PS pathogenesis and thus form an essential theoretical foundation for the prevention and treatment of the disorder.…”
