Caregiver's burden, coping and psycho-education in Indian households with single- and multiple-affected members with schizophrenia

Abstract: There is considerable evidence that family psycho-education combined with pharmacological intervention for patients with schizophrenia increases family understanding of the illness, reduces the familial burden of care, and improves patient outcomes. However, no studies have determined whether the burden of care is greater for those families with more than one ill member (multiplex) than for families with a single-affected individual (simplex), and whether psycho-educational programs should be adapted to meet t… Show more

“…Various social support programs have thus been designed to serve family caregivers of PwS, such as psychoeducation interventions, family therapies and group counseling (Chakraborty, Bhatia, Anderson, Nimgaonkar, & Deshpande, 2014; McDonell, Short, Berry, & Dyck, 2003; Ran et al, 2003; Sharif, Shaygan, & Mani, 2012). Identifying determinants associated with caregiving burden is essential in developing more appropriate strategies for these family interventions and home-based services (Tse, Ran, Huang, & Zhu, 2013).…”

“…In biological psychiatry, a multiplex family has been a major concern because it is the key to establishing the crucial gene behind the disease. As an extension of this context, the burden of care was reported to be highly significant for families with more than one ill member (multiplex) compared to families with a single affected individual (simplex) [ 34 ]. Contrarily, what we encountered in this study was not associated with genetic multiplexity.…”
