Multicenter review of robotic versus laparoscopic ventral hernia repair: is there a role for robotics?

Abstract: Our retrospective data show that robotic repair was associated with decreased recurrence and surgical site occurrence. However, the differences noted in the patient populations limit the interpretability of these results. As adoption of robotic ventral hernia repair increases, prospective trials need to be designed in order to investigate the efficacy, safety, and cost effectiveness of this evolving technique.

“…We selected 50 cases for our ramp-up period to ensure that operating room teams and surgeons had optimized workflow and to mitigate any risk of longer operative time and complications associated with a possible “learning curve” effect of the standardized ventral hernia repair technique used for this study. Patients in the “ramp-up” period were not included in this study; however, we reviewed and published our previous clinical experience with robotics to establish a baseline of expertise 1516…”

“…All observational studies were performed in the USA, except for two studies 27 , 35 from Austria and Australia. Ten studies 12–14 , 23 , 25 , 29 , 30 , 32 , 35 , 38 were multi-institutional, 11 22 , 24 , 26–28 , 31 , 33 , 34 , 37 , 39 , 40 were from a single institution, and one study 36 did not specify the number of centres. Propensity matching was performed in six studies 23 , 25 , 30 , 32 , 36 , 38 .…”
