First experimental proof of Proton Boron Capture Therapy (PBCT) to enhance protontherapy effectiveness

Abstract: Protontherapy is hadrontherapy’s fastest-growing modality and a pillar in the battle against cancer. Hadrontherapy’s superiority lies in its inverted depth-dose profile, hence tumour-confined irradiation. Protons, however, lack distinct radiobiological advantages over photons or electrons. Higher LET (Linear Energy Transfer) 12C-ions can overcome cancer radioresistance: DNA lesion complexity increases with LET, resulting in efficient cell killing, i.e. higher Relative Biological Effectiveness (RBE). However, e… Show more

“…The ratio between the dose from the proton boron capture and the one due to the primary proton, as a function of the depth inside the tissue, is shown in the right panel of Figure 4. It can be noted that, apart from being very low in absolute, the depth profile of this ratio is opposite to what would be desirable for enhancing the therapeutic effectiveness of proton therapy, and it is in clear contradiction with the experimental results of Cirrone et al 4 .…”

“…According to Ref. 4 , the maximum effect of PBCT is obtained at the end of the proton range, due to a resonance-like structure peaking around 700 keV. At its maximum, a cross section of ∼1 barn has been reported by Segel et al 7,8 .…”
