Testicular leiomyomas and gonadal dysfunctions are not commonly reported in teleost and particularly in broodstock fish. In the present work, a testicular leiomyoma related to an unusual case of spermatogenic failure syndrome, in a broodstock seabass coming from an Italian aquaculture farm, is reported. At gross pathology, the circumscribed neoplasia showed several white nodular masses, originating from the gonad, deforming the anatomo‐physiological shape. From light microscopy, the presence of neoplastic tissue islands with spindle cells with a whirling pattern and the low presence of connective tissue were evident and originated from smooth muscle cells. Seminiferous tubules showed severe azoospermia with the absence of sperm cells even closer to the neoplastic area. Immunohistochemical analysis was positive for alpha‐SMA, desmin and vimentin but negative for S‐100, confirming a diagnosis of leiomyoma. This is the first report of spermatogenic failure syndrome associated with a testicular leiomyoma in fish from broodstock. More efforts should be made in studying broodstock fish pathologies related to fish maintenance and hormonal treatments that could economically affect aquaculture production.

Invertebrates are precious organisms in order to study environmental pollution. In particular, they appear to be suitable as a bioindicator species for pioneer ecotoxicity studies on new xenobiotics such as nanoparticles. In fact, they are able to absorb nanomaterials scattered in the environment in different ways and it's known the compartmentalization of nano‐sized contaminants in selected tissues and intracellular organelles. Titanium dioxide represents the most used nanoparticulate, destined to become probably ubiquitous in the environment. Recently, some research has been published on the toxic potential of nano‐TiO2 in several animal species. Among all invertebrates, Oniscidean Isopods are the only taxon of Crustaceans that has become completely terrestrial, known as excellent bioindicators and bioaccumulators. They have a digestive gland, the hepatopancreas, which is the location of election for the accumulation of pollutants. For this reason, they are considered efficient animal models to ecological studies. For this study, we collected Armadillo officinalis from Natural Oriented Reserve of “Vendicari” (Sicily, Italy), to evaluate the toxicity of titanium dioxide (TiO2) on their hepatopancreas, after a short period of exposure. We conducted morphostructural and immunohistochemistry assays. The results suggested a great capacity of the species of bioaccumulation of nanoparticles in the hepatopancreas, where a strong positivity to the metallothioneins was highlighted. Our study confirms that Oniscidean Isopods, in particular Armadillo officinalis, proved to be an appropriate indicator of pollution in terrestrial ecosystems from nanoparticles.

This research was conducted to assess various bioactive compounds in the meat of mudskippers found in the Sungsang 2 Village, Banyuasin regency, South Sumatra. The research had been synthesized using n-hexane from February to May 2018 at Agricultural Technology Production Laboratory, Sriwijaya University. Subsequently, the mudskippers (Periopthalmus chrysospilos, Boleopthalmus boddarti, and Periophthalmodon schlosseri) extract was synthesized and further investigate by conducting the GC-MS analysis. The study of bioactive compounds in mudskippers was carried out by evaporating in vacuum evaporation at 30°C. The results showed that Periopthalmus chrysospilos has five classes of bioactive compounds such as steroids, terpenoids, carotenoids, canabinoids, and alkaloids and Boleopthalmus boddarti has five classes of bioactive compounds including steroids, carotenoids, terpenoids, bufadienolides, and carotatoxins. Furthermore, Boleopthalmus dussumieri has four classes of bioactive compounds such as steroids, carotenoids, terpenoids, and carotatoxins and Periophthalmodon schlosseri has three classes of bioactive compounds including steroids, carotenoids and terpenoids. This research discussed the potential benefit of all bioactive compounds in mudskippers for alleviating and treating children with enuresis through the review of literature on the most cited bioactive compounds.
