Multiple Sclerosis and Exercise: A Literature Review

Abstract: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common autoimmune disabling neurological conditions of young adults and affects more than 2.3 million people worldwide. Given the high likelihood for disability and decreased neurological function, there have been concerns about the role of exercise in MS patients with a fear of increased injury. This article looks at recent articles evaluating the role of exercise in MS and can hopefully be used by patients, caregivers, and health care providers to guide decision making abo… Show more

“…In recent years, many studies have included resistance training in their physical exercise programs for PwMS [4,[8][9][10], and have shown promising results for improving quality of life and functional capacity after 8 to 12 weeks of training [11]. To increase efficiency as well as to increase exercise safety, training loads should be individualized to each person [12].…”

“…[1][2][3] In terms of rehabilitation, exercise therapy has shown to be effective for improving or maintaining motor and cognitive functions such as mobility and cognitive processing speed in PwMS. 4,5 Another approach for rehabilitation of these functions is task-oriented training. 6 Walking is an ecological type of functional task-oriented training that supports neuroplastic changes as it is activity-specific, involving spinal pattern generators and other motor pathways in the brain.…”

“…Given the cited preference among some people with disabilities for content created by relevant experts [ 8 ] and the fact that the overall increase in fitness content created by "Hospitals/Medical Institutions" channels on YouTube during COVID-19 did not translate to a meaningful increase in accessible content, another future study would include analyzing accessibility of disability-friendly videos only created by Hospitals/Medical Institutions. Members of the disability community have previously identified safety as an important variable in their decision to engage in PA [ 44 , 45 ]. Although it is possible for “Individual” or “Other” channels to provide safe PA options for people with disabilities, not all “Individuals” will have experience working with people with disabilities unlike "Hospitals/Medical Institutions."…”
