New insights into stage and prognosis in small cell lung cancer: an analysis of 968 cases

Abstract: Background: The French College of General Hospital Respiratory Physicians conducted two studies that consecutively included all patients followed in participating general hospitals for primary small cell (SCLC) or non-small cell (NSCLC) lung cancer diagnosed in 2000 and 2010. These studies allow descriptive statistics and outcome assessment for SCLC and NSCLC separately and comparison over a 10-year period. Methods: A standardised form was completed for each patient at inclusion. Then, vital status was colle… Show more

“…Stage was the most frequently investigated clinical parameter in addition to TLG. TLG had an additional or superior prognostic value to stage for OS [ 23 , 32 , 33 , 35 ], but the results applied only for one subgroup in the study of Nobashi et al [ 1 ]. Other clinical parameters were sporadic included in the multivariate analysis ( Figure 3 c).…”

“…Compared with other covariates included in the multivariate analysis, an additional independent or superior prognostic value of SU-Vmax to stage, age, blood lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), sex, and performance status (PS) was sporadic (Figure 3a). 1 Özdemir accounted twice due to different results in subgroups, 2 Nobashi accounted twice due to different results in subgroups, 3 Choi accounted twice due to different results in subgroups.…”

“…As novel diagnostic modalities such as CT, MRI, and PET-CT have been increasingly adopted into clinical practice, the sensitivity of detecting small lesions has improved in parallel. 24 In the current study, the initial comprehensive staging according to the 8th TNM classification including PET-CT and brain MRI/CT had enough power to accurately discriminate between the subgroups of ED-SCLC patients treated with chemotherapy.…”
